  • Barack Obama Says He Was Booted From Disneyland For Smoking Cigarettes

Barack Obama Says He Was Booted From Disneyland For Smoking Cigarettes

Former President Barack Obama spoke at a rally in Anaheim, California, on Saturday afternoon to support seven Democratic congressional candidates, but he had the audience laughing as he recanted a story about how he was kicked out of Disneyland for smoking with his friends.

Dating himself a little bit, Obama stated he was in college at the time and was attending a Kool and the Gang concert at the park. When the concert was over he and his friends decided to take a ride on the gondolas and were smoking on the ride. “These were cigarettes, people,” he added, as the crowd laughed.

He recalled two large officers meeting them at the end of the ride who proceeded to escort Obama and his friends out of the park for breaking the rules. “This is a true story, everybody,” he said. “I was booted from the Magic Kingdom.”

Obama remembers that the guards told him he could come back to the park at any time.  The company’s policy hasn’t changed much over the years it seems as Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Bob Iger got in on the fun and took to Twitter Saturday backing up securities statement.

Take look at video below to hear Obamas story in his own words.

The 44th president made his Disneyland comments at a campaign rally intended to help the Democrats take back the House of Representatives in the November election. Obama has largely stayed out of the spotlight since leaving office, but he’s been more active on the political scene over the past couple days.

At Saturday’s event in Anaheim, Obama encouraged voters to take off their “bedroom slippers” and put on their “marching boots.”

  • State Says Cooling Towers Are To Blame For Legionnaires’ Outbreak At Disneyland Last Year

State Says Cooling Towers Are To Blame For Legionnaires’ Outbreak At Disneyland Last Year

Orange County, California was ground zero to one of the nations largest Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks last year. 22 people fell ill and one person died.

Local health officials were never able to find the exact cause of the infections, but they believed the outbreak was connected to Disneyland since 19 out of the 22 people affected had visited the park.

Back in March, the park was fined more than $33,000 for failing to properly clean cooling equipment linked to the outbreak and for other related violations by The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration, according to a citation issued by Cal-OSHA and obtained by the LA Times.

Cal-OSHA only investigates hazards that endanger workers, but they began looking into the Legionnaires’ cause because three Disneyland employees fell ill during the outbreak and two of them required hospitalization. The findings do not address how the 19 non-employees were infected.

“The employer did not follow the manufacturer’s cooling tower start-up maintenance and water treatment procedure to control outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease,” Cal-OSHA said in the citation. “As a result, two employees suffered serious illness requiring hospitalization of more than 24 hours.”

Disneyland denies the claims stating that the source of the outbreak could have been elsewhere in Anaheim and they have appealed the citations. In October the company will make their case at a hearing before a three-member appeals.

“We strongly object to Cal-OSHA’s allegation that our cooling towers caused any illness, since the source of the outbreak has never been scientifically determined,” Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown said in a statement.

In August 2017, people who had visited Disneyland or spent time in Anaheim began to report feeling ill. They were diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease, a lung infection caused by breathing in water droplets containing bacteria known as Legionella.

Orange County health officials have stated that Disneyland’s cooling towers have been free of Legionella since November, and there is currently no risk to the public.

Disney said it had learned about “increased Legionnaires’ disease cases in Anaheim” from county health officials Oct. 27. “We conducted a review and learned that two cooling towers had elevated levels of Legionella bacteria,” Dr. Pamela Hymel, chief medical officer for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said in a statement at the time. “These towers were treated with chemicals that destroy the bacteria and are currently shut down.”

Most Legionnaires’ outbreaks are linked to cooling towers, part of an air conditioning system that releases mist. The illness does not spread from person to person, so people who become sick each have to inhale the contaminated droplets. Without proper cleaning, cooling towers can create the perfect environment for Legionella to grow. The cooling towers require regular disinfecting to ensure they are not developing Legionella, experts say.

Health officials never formally identified the cooling towers as the source, and Disneyland officials have said that the test results don’t definitively prove that the towers were to blame.

Brown said there are several cooling towers nearby that are outside the park and were never tested and pointed out that three people who fell sick had not visited the park, including the one person who died.

The Cal-OSHA investigation found that Disneyland had not adequately cleaned the towers, which caused high levels of bacteria to grow.

One of the towers had been drained of water when it was taken offline at the beginning of 2017, but bacteria thrived in stagnant water still in the pipes, Cal-OSHA investigators said in a written report.

Disneyland was “not effectively performing weekly bacteria inspections” at that time, so water containing Legionella was sent back into both cooling towers when they were brought online in August 2017, according to a Cal-OSHA document.

“The employer failed to ensure equipment in service (was) kept clean, in sanitary condition, inspected and maintained as recommended by the manufacturer, as not to give rise to employee harmful exposure to Legionella pneumophila and other airborne bacteria,” the Cal-OSHA citation said.

The three workers who contracted Legionnaires’ disease — a cook, an operating engineer and a laborer — came within 50 to 200 feet of the cooling towers, a Cal-OSHA document said.

Disneyland typically tests its cooling towers quarterly, according to theme park records that were obtained through a public records request from the Orange County public health department.

But the cooling towers weren’t tested for Legionella last year while they were offline, the document shows. The first tests in 2017 came in late September, when the lab reports showed high levels of the bacteria.

The bulk of the fines levied against Disneyland were for not cleaning the towers properly. The agency also fined Disneyland for not reporting all the employee illnesses to Cal-OSHA.

“We have continually cooperated with Cal-OSHA’s various investigations, and fully complied with its reporting requirements with respect to our employees,” Brown said in the statement.

  • Disney Reveals Details of Oga’s Cantina Coming To Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Disney Reveals Details of Oga’s Cantina Coming To Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

No matter how far far away the galaxy’s newest outpost might be, it wouldn’t be complete with out a cantina! Today, Disney revealed details on a watering hole fit for a smuggler that is set to open at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Black Spire Outpost at Galaxy’s edge will be home to Oga’s Cantina, which will be serving pilots, bounty hunters, smugglers, locals and galactic travelers alike, when it opens in 2019.

Visitors come to this notorious local cantina, conduct shady business, and maybe even encounter a friend…or a foe. Run by an intriguing alien proprietor, Oga Garra, the cantina adheres to a strict code of conduct that tries to keep its unruly patrons in check. But with a history of being a smugglers’ safe haven and a popular stopping point for those seeking to avoid the authorities, you can bet that the cantina has a story or two to tell.

Oga’s Cantina is the kind of establishment that attracts some of the most interesting and disreputable characters in the galaxy. And you never know when a stormtrooper or a familiar face will show up. Patrons of the cantina come from across the galaxy to sample the famous concoctions created with exotic ingredients using “otherworldly” methods, served in unique vessels. With choices for kids and libations for adults, the cantina will make for a great stop!

Musical entertainment is provided courtesy of RX-24, the former StarSpeeder 3000 pilot droid we first met in Star Tours, who has re-envisioned himself as the cantina’s DJ. As quirky and talkative as ever, he’s still trying to do his best on the job.

Get ready to listen to some unique music, taste the best drinks in the galaxy, and surround yourself with a colorful cast of characters. You never know what will happen at the cantina!

Oga’s Cantina opens its doors at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in 2019 at both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort.

  • Anaheim Ends $267 Million in Disney Theme Park Subsidies

Anaheim Ends $267 Million in Disney Theme Park Subsidies

The Anaheim City Council and Walt Disney Co. took a step closer to settling an ongoing feud by agreeing to cancel about $267 million in subsidies that the entertainment conglomerate would be entitled to if it built a luxury hotel at the Disneyland Resort in California.

While seven members of the city council, including Mayor Tom Tait, voted late Tuesday to honor Disney’s request to terminate two agreements from 2015 and 2016, they may also have encouraged Disney to scrap plans for what would have been its fourth hotel servicing Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park.

Disney and Anaheim have been at odds recently because some city leaders complain that the company receives too many benefits at the expense of taxpayers, and Disneyland Resort President Josh D’Amaro acknowledged in an August 21 letter that economic incentives had created an “adversarial climate” and had become “a flashpoint for controversy.”

“Consequently, we are asking the City to join us in terminating both agreements,” D’Amaro said in his letter, which spurred Tuesday’s vote.

One of the agreements would have given Disney 70 percent of the occupancy taxes it collected at a four-diamond hotel it was planning to build, while another agreement prevented Anaheim from introducing a tax on theme-park tickets for at least 45 years if Disney invested $1.5 billion at its parks there. There are no such taxes on tickets now, but Tait acknowledges that with the latter agreement now defunct, there’s nothing to stop such a tax if it is warranted in the future.

Disney initially planned a 700-room hotel at the site of a parking lot on Disneyland Drive and its economic impact report suggested it would have created 1,500 construction jobs and 1,000 permanent jobs while not causing any loss of jobs.

Disney, though, changed the location of the hotel, moving it about 1,500 feet to a spot within the Downtown Disney shopping district, causing the closure of the Rainforest Cafe, ESPN Zone, an AMC Theatre and Earl of Sandwich.

When Tait and the rest of the council informed Disney it would need to conduct a new economic study, Disney instead fired off the August 21 letter renouncing its own incentives.

“The new location took out 130,000 square feet of retail, taking out 450 jobs, so the jobs analysis was completely flawed,” Tait told The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’ve been opposed to these subsidies for some time now. We need every penny of taxpayer money to pay for vital services,” Tait said. “So it really is great of Disney to have done this. They hit the reset button in our relationship.”

Some have suggested that Disney was motivated to get rid of the subsidies so that it could avoid a potential hike in the minimum wage it must pay its employees in Anaheim. Disney will pay its employees at least $15 an hour beginning in January, but a ballot measure dictates that companies receiving subsidies will have to pay $18 an hour by 2022.

Disney recently said that its plans for a new hotel are on hold indefinitely. After Tuesday night’s vote, a Disney spokesperson said: “These tax incentive policies, which are successfully and widely used across the country to stimulate economic growth and development, unfortunately became counterproductive in Anaheim, prompting our decision to step away from them.”

Tait said Disney is free to build a hotel “with its own money” and that if it chooses not to, the city won’t lose much revenue because tourists will simply stay in one of the 20,000 existing rooms — none of which are subsidized by taxpayers — that are available near the theme parks.

“Disney did the right thing,” said Tait, a Republican. “These agreements had become toxic. I’m very pro-business, but I’m also fiscally responsible with the people’s money.”
