Spider-Man Out of MCU After Marvel and Sony fail to Reach Deal

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is losing its friendly neighborhood Spider-Man as recent reports have revealed that Sony Pictures and Disney will not be working together on upcoming MCU projects.

According to a report by Deadline, Feige’s exit was about money; it was about Disney seeking the 50/50 co-fi stake as the price for Marvel and Feige’s continued involvement. Sony declined to meet those terms.

It was an aggressive stance, but these talks had been going on for some time. Had Sony agreed to Disney’s ask, Marvel and Feige would not have withdrawn from the Spider-Man films, sources said. Sony took to Twitter with a differnt take on the break up as you can see in the tweet below:

One source said that a deal might still be reached between Disney and Sony but there are no talks currently going on. Disney is believed to have expressed concerns that Feige was spread too thin due to other Marvel projects plus original projects for Disney Plus, according to a report from Variety.

Sony has controlled the rights to the web-slinger since 1999, but the two studios have been sharing Spider-Man across numerous films since 2015, including major roles in the latest “Avengers” movies. As part of the previous agreement, Marvel had also been acting as a producer on the 2017 and 2019 standalone Sony “Spider-Man” movies starring Tom Holland, which were both box-office blockbusters.

  • ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Becomes the Highest-Grossing Film Ever Passing ‘Avatar’

‘Avengers: Endgame’ Becomes the Highest-Grossing Film Ever Passing ‘Avatar’

After 13 weeks in theaters, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame has overtaken the global box office record that has been held by Avatar for the past 10 years.

Avengers: Endgame shattered records when it opened on April 26 with $1.2236 billion globally, including $357.1 million and $866.5 million internationally. It crossed the $1 billion mark in just five days and the $2 billion mark in 11. The film has grossed $2.79 billion passing Avatar which sits at $2.78 billion.

“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights,” said Alan Horn, Co-Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of The Walt Disney Studios, of the historic achievement.

To date it is still the No. 2 domestic release of all time, taking in $854 million in the U.S. box office, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens which has accumulated $936 million. It’s the No. 1 release of all time in 25 territories, and the No. 3 highest grossing film of all time in China with $629 million.

“Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora,” said Horn.

  • Disney Obtains Permits to Build Marvel Land at Califonia Adventure

Disney Obtains Permits to Build Marvel Land at Califonia Adventure

As we previously reported, Disney has plans to bring Marvel Land to Disneyland Resort and now those plans are in full swing as the company has recently obtained permits to begin the expansion.

Last year, CEO Bob Iger teased the expansion to the company’s California Adventure Park at Disneyland Resort, and it seems Disney is moving full steam ahead to bring its popular superhero franchise to parkgoers.

The city of Anaheim has approved a handful of building permits for projects such as a bathroom overhaul, a retail outlet, a microbrewery, a character meet-and-greet area, plus improvements to behind-the-scenes buildings

The construction permits assess the value of the work so far at more than $14 million, according to an L.A. Times report.

Licensing agreements that predated Disney’s 2009 acquisition of Marvel Entertainment bans the word “Marvel” from appearing on any theme-park land. However, it is possible that Disney has found a way around that either legally or by using the word “Avengers” in its place.

The Marvel-themed park will be located near the Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout ride, which took the place of the Tower of Terror ride in 2017

More details about the land are expected to be released at the 2019 D23 Expo scheduled for Aug. 23 to 25

Marvel land is reportedly slated to open at Disneyland Resort in 2020 and New Marvel Lands will also be developed in Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong.

  • Angelina Jolie in Talks to Join Marvel’s ‘The Eternals’ in MCU Phase 4

Angelina Jolie in Talks to Join Marvel’s ‘The Eternals’ in MCU Phase 4

Some mega-star power may be coming to Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the form of Oscar winner actress Angelina Jolie.

Jolie is in talks to joinMarvel’s upcoming Phase 4 offering, “The Eternals,” directed by indie auteur Chloé Zhao, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Eternals are a fictional species of humanity appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. They are described as an offshoot of the evolutionary process that created sentient life on Earth. The original instigators of this process, the alien Celestials, intended the Eternals to be the defenders of Earth, which leads to the inevitability of war against their destructive counterparts, the Deviants. The Eternals were created by Jack Kirby and made their first appearance in 1976.

The new project is said to be focusing on a romance between Ikaris, a man who draws his power from cosmic energy, making him practically immortal, and Sersi, a brilliant female Eternal who has the ability to alter her appearance and often prefers to live among mortals, according to THR.

It is not yet clear which character Jolie would play. No official announcement has been made, but it is understood that Marvel is moving ahead with the project after studio president Kevin Feige confirmed its development last April, as part of Marvel’s so-called “Phase 4”. Jolie would be a huge get for the studio and could help jump start one of the more obscure Marvel titles.

  • Disney Rehires James Gunn to Direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’

Disney Rehires James Gunn to Direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’

After firing James Gunn back in July, Disney has reinstated Gunn as director of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”

Gunn was fired following the resurfacing of offensive tweets that made light of child sex abuse. The director apologized for the sentiments, which were resurfaced by conservative talking head Mike Cernovich, but was quickly axed by family-friendly Disney over the graphic and immature nature of his comments.

When Gunn was fired, he issued a statement apologizing for his previous tweets.

“My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative,” his July 2018 statement read. “I have regretted them for many years since — not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.”

The firing was controversial, with “Guardians of the Galaxy” stars, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper and Dave Bautista, signing an open letter asking for the filmmaker to be rehired. Bautista, in particular, had been outspoken in his support of Gunn.

Marvel Studios put “Guardians 3” on hold, though Marvel head Kevin Feige and others involved have maintained they intended to make the film happen. “Guardians 3” never had a release date, but Gunn previously said it would open in 2020.

After firing Gunn, speculation began about who would replace the filmmaker. The search didn’t go far and according to Deadline there never really was one. Disney had gone back to Gunn and made a deal.

Bringing the director back wouldn’t be a complete breeze as Gunn had already signed on to Warner Bros. and DC to write and direct “The Suicide Squad.” To make the whole thing easier Marvel Studios agreed to commence production onGuardians of the Galaxy 3″ after Gunn completes “Suicide Squad 2.”

  • Disney Responds After Dying Marvel Fan Asks to See ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Before Release

Disney Responds After Dying Marvel Fan Asks to See ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Before Release

A Marvel fan by the name of Alexander might just be among the first members of the public to catch a screening of “Avengers: Endgame”.

Alexander, 33, of Australia is suffering from a rare genetic disease. His final request is to see the sequel to “Avengers: Infinity War” before its April 26 premiere.

“Liver cancer, mouth cancer, bone marrow failure,” Alexander wrote in a Reddit post titled “Dying Before April: My Endgame” last week. He said he has heard of people getting early screenings before and asked, “How do I get in on this action?”

“I’m not a child or anyone with a particularly tragic story. Just a normal guy,” he continued. “I’m 33, lost my sister three years ago to the same rare genetic disease it turns out I have too. I’ll leave behind a devoted girlfriend and an adopted greyhound.”

The post generated an incredible amount of support and quickly developed into a full-fledged viral social media campaign. Reddit users tagged the accounts of directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Members of this sometimes horrifying but sometimes — such as in this case — beautiful thing called the Internet also created a Twitter campaign called #Avengers4Alexander.

Alexander revealed on Thursday that Disney has reached out to him and the two parties are discussing options. “This is everything I could have hoped for!” exclaimed Alexander.

Whatsmore, “because Australia is a small place, turns out I know a guy who knows a guy who is chums with Chris Hemsworth. I think they called him tonight on my behalf,” Alexander revealed.

Alexander suffers from a rare genetic disease called fancomi anemia. He inherited the disease that severely affects the production of bone marrow.
