  • Disneyland Can’t Mention “Marvel” In New Land Due To Universal Contract

Disneyland Can’t Mention “Marvel” In New Land Due To Universal Contract

Disney recently announced a Marvel themed land coming to many of its parks around the world, but due to a contract that Marvel signed long before Disney acquired the company, they are not allowed to use the mention Marvel anywhere in Disneyland Resorts theme parks in Anaheim California.

Many Walt Disney World fans already know that the rights for most Marvel characters belong to Universal Studios and can’t be used anywhere in Disney World. But what you may not know is that the quarter-century old contract — which gives Universal the rights to Marvel characters east of the Mississippi River — is the same contract that also states that the Marvel’s name can’t be used in any theme park west of the Mississippi.

The new land in Anaheim will feature superheroes made famous in Marvel comic books, movies and video games, including Spider-Man, the Hulk and Iron man and many others. Just don’t expect it to be called Marvel Land. They can use the characters, but they just can’t mention Marvel anywhere. Marvel Entertainment was purchased by Disney in 2009, but still must follow licensing agreements with other movie studios.

Unlike Walt Disney World in Orlando, Disneyland in California is free to use Marvel characters however they like whether or not they appear at any Universal theme parks and they certainly don’t plan of changing their plans. They will be moving at superhero speed to complete the projects, but they will just have to call it something different, like “Avengers Land” or “Place with Lots of Superheros Land.”  They will think of something and most people probably won’t give it a second thought. Working out a deal with universal isn’t out of the question either.

Disney officials declined to comment on the licensing agreement but said the deal won’t derail their plans to build an expansion that will resonate with fans, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“We are excited to bring these stories and their compelling characters to life with a new land in Disney California Adventure park,” said Disney spokeswoman Suzi Brown.

  • ‘Black Panther’ Sails Past ‘Titanic’ To Third Highest Grossing U.S. Film All Time

‘Black Panther’ Sails Past ‘Titanic’ To Third Highest Grossing U.S. Film All Time

Marvel’s “Black Panther” is still clawing its way into the record books. This weekend the film passed director James Cameron’s “Titanic” becoming the third highest-grossing U.S. film of all time.

“Titanic” was once king at the box office and it sat as the number one highest grossing domestic film of all time for nearly a decade. The film held onto the spot until it was surpassed by Cameron’s next blockbuster film “Avatar” ($760.5m) and both were eventually passed by Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936.6m), which still currently holds the number one spot in the U.S. Well there is a new cat in town and the king of Wakanda just sank “Titanic”.

On Saturday, The Ryan Coogler-directed film starring Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan and Danai Gurira finished with a domestic total of $665.3 million which easily passed “Titanic” which sits at $659.5 million. After Sundays numbers post it will have a strong hold on third place. These numbers are lifetime totals as the film had already had taken the third spot domestically by Friday if you consider initial release gross earnings.

Marvel’s ground breaking film — which has been hailed not only for Coogler’s exceptional world building and layered story but also for its virtually all-black cast of superstars — overtook Marvel’s Avengers to become the biggest-selling superhero film of all time.

“Black Panther” had enough steam to pass “Titanic”, but likely won’t be able to pass “Avatar”. This is still a huge feat for the superhero flick though as “Titanic” was ranked in the top three for two decades.

The only thing that stands a chance at dethroning “Black Panther” from the third spot in the near future is the upcoming release of “Avengers Infinity War” on April 27, 2018. Experts predict that “Infinity War” will bringing between $175 million and $200 million during its first weekend, but that is still less than the $202 million “Black Panther” brought in.

“Black Panther” banked $202 million opening weekend landing fifth-place on the all-time charts. Still at this point “Black Panther” remains Marvel’s highest domestic-grossing film ever and it’s also the tenth highest movie of all time in worldwide sales with $1.29 billion globally.

If “Infinity War” does surpass “Black Panther”, you can bet some of those ticket sales will be from people there to see their new favorite actor Chadwick Boseman reprise his role as Black Panther and Avenger where the world of Wakanda has a pivotal role in the film as The Avengers try to stop Thanos from completing his set of Infinity Stones.

Including the films that would be under Disney’s banner with the recent acquisition of 21st Century Fox, Disney already owns seven of the top ten worldwide highest grossing films of all time and now with this new milestone they own all of the top three highest grossing domestic films.

  • $3.3 Billion Disneyland-Style Theme Park To Open In Egypt

$3.3 Billion Disneyland-Style Theme Park To Open In Egypt

Rumors of the possibility of a Disney Park coming to Egypt have been going around for quite some time and recently they have started back up again after Martouh Governor Alaa Abu Zeid signed an investment contract with the Entertainment World Company establish a Disneyland-style amusement park worth $3.3 billion.

The news comes from an Egypt Independent report on February 1st and it has caused some confusion. The reports are on multiple news outlets in Egypt and they have stirred up the rumors again, most likely because of the choice words “Disneyland-style amusement park.”

It started back in 2014 when the state-run news MENA agency reported “There are discussions going on between Disney International to build in Egypt its first Disney Park in the Middle East, similar to Disney France,” Ashraf Salman, Egypt’s investment minister, said.

At that time Disney flat out denied any plans for a new park in Egypt according to The Washington Post. “At Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, we continually look for ways to grow our business and as part of that process, we have conversations with many different entities,” a spokesperson for the company said in an e-mailed statement. “While Egypt is an attractive market, we have no plans for the region at this time.”

While that’s not a denial that they could have been in talks, there were not and still are no plans by the Walt Disney Company to build a park in the country. Well that was then and this is now and it looks like Egypt is moving forward without Disney in a joint US-Saudi Arabian investment project and making their own theme park which would be in the “style” of Disneyland, but not with the theme of disneyland.

The theme park will be built on an area of 5,080 acres in Sidi Heneish, Marsa Matrouh. The Local Development Minister Abu Baker Al-Gendy, Investment and International Cooperation Minister Sahar Nasr, and Chairperson of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones Mona Zobaa were present at the signing ceremony hosted by Abu Zeid and Lisa Marie Stephen, the Managing Director of Entertainment World in the Middle East and Africa, the report states.

According to Nasr, the park will be the biggest foreign investment project after the new investment law and its executive regulations. The project is expected to take up to ten years to complete and would generate around 40,000 new jobs. The first phase to be completed in around two years.

While Egypt may not be getting a Disney theme park, Saudi Arabia may actually be in the running to be the first in the middle east to be home to a Disney Park after a delegation of Saudi officials, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, met with Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger on Wednesday.

They discussed Disney’s future in the Saudi Kingdom and the meeting mainly focused on movies and entertainment, but the crown prince highlighted the massive opportunities which exist in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where a solid infrastructure and a massive demand for Disney products and services exist. While nothing specific was mentioned about a theme park, it seems like the crown prince was hinting that there is a market for it, but they are just talks at this point and nothing has been planned.

One thing is clear, the region is clearly making an effort to increase its entertainment industries and boost their tourism numbers.

The Sweet Spells production kitchen will be removed, but you will still be able to find some of the prepackaged favorites when the new store opens.

  • Crown Prince Discusses Disney’s Future in Saudi Arabia With Bob Iger

Crown Prince Discusses Disney’s Future in Saudi Arabia With Bob Iger

A delegation of Saudi officials, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, met with Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger on Wednesday to pitch his bold new plans to build an entertainment industry largely from the ground up to about 250 representatives from major Hollywood financiers and players.

Saudi Arabia has been undergoing a massive economic and social transformation under the ambitious Vision 2030 reform plan launched by the crown prince two years ago, according to a report from Arab News. A handful of deals have already been secured including one with AMC, the world’s largest movie theater company which as been granted the first licenses to operate movie theaters in the Middle Eastern country after the lifting of a 35-year-old ban on cinemas in the Middle Eastern country.

At the meeting they discussed potential cooperation in the entertainment, culture and film-making arenas. The meeting highlighted the massive opportunities which exist in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where a solid infrastructure and a massive demand for Disney products and services exist.

In addition to re-opening cinemas, the country has announced it is lifting the ban on women driving and that it has curbed the powers of its religious police. Women now can also attend sporting events, and Saudi officials are loosening dress-code restrictions for women, who have traditionally been required to cover most of their bodies and faces and be accompanied by male chaperones. The country has established the General Authority for Entertainment (GEA), a government body empowered to meet the massive demand for entertainment in the Saudi kingdom

The Saudi kingdom, which boasts a population of 32 million and receives millions of Muslims every year for Hajj and Umra pilgrimage, is strengthening its non-religious tourism sector and has plans to issue new guidelines for visas which will open-up the country to visitors from around the world. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has just signed an agreement with Six Flags to develop and design an amusement park in Riyadh and one might wonder if Iger and the crown prince might be considering a Disney theme park for the country as well.

Feld Entertainment and the new GEA are entering a long-term relationship to produce international events, including “Disney on Ice,” “Disney Live,” “Marvel Experience,” and “Monster Jam.” This collaboration also gives Saudis an opportunity to receive training as professional performers.

The crown prince also met with a group of heads of US entertainment and media companies and discussed areas of cooperation and partnership in the media and entertainment sectors, and reviewed the latest technologies in this regard.

Disney World Introduces New Digital Key Feature For Keyless Room Entry

Entering your resort room on Walt Disney World property is about to get even easier. Coming soon, Disney will be implementing a new “Digital Key” feature to the My Disney Experience app that will allow guests to quickly unlock their hotel room using a digital key on their mobile devices.

Guests staying at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge will get to test the new technology first, providing them with another seamless room entry option that brings added ease and flexibility to their experience.

Guests can also use their digital key to unlock the hotel entrance gate and common area doors requiring a key, which may include pools, fitness centers, elevators and club level lounges. Arriving travel parties that have checked in online may even use their digital key to bypass the need to visit the front desk, giving them the opportunity to go directly to their room when it is ready and start their vacation even faster.

The feature represents the latest evolution of keyless room entry, which we began offering with the MagicBand, the unique all-in-one device that effortlessly connects the vacation choices guests make in My Disney Experience. Guests may use either or both options to enter their room during their stay.

So how does it work? To use their digital key, guests can opt in and activate the feature on their check-in day through a brief set up process in the app. To enter their room, guests tap the “Unlock Door” button and then simply hold their phone against the door lock. Check out the video below to see a sneak peek of the feature in action.

At Walt Disney World Resort, they are always looking for ways to wow their guests with new technology that enhances the experience. The My Disney Experience app is a perfect example, with recently introduced features like mobile order and online check-in that are providing families and friends with additional choices to make their vacation even more enjoyable and convenient.

Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices with the latest version of the My Disney Experience app are required to take advantage of a digital key for room entry. And don’t forget to wear your MagicBand for all other uses including park entry, FastPass+ redemption, room charges and more.
