  • New Interactive MagicBands Finally Debut at Disney World

New Interactive MagicBands Finally Debut at Disney World

Disney Parks new interactive MagicBand+ has finally made its debut at Walt Disney World.

The original MagicBand was introduced in 2013 at Walt Disney World, allowing guests to go-hands free for things like park admission, hotel room entry, retail and dining.

The new version of the wearable device features color-changing lights and haptic vibrations. It will also be able to recognize gestures.

Guests will be able to use the band to interact with the new 50th anniversary character statues, the nighttime spectaculars and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

In the Star Wars-themed land, for example, guests will be able to use MagicBand+ to find virtual bounties. During the nighttime spectaculars, the device will light up and complement what’s happening in the shows.

Along with the new features, MagicBand+ will continue to have the same functions as previous version of MagicBand, including park entry, guest room entry and Disney PhotoPass.

The new interactive MagicBand can be found at Disney Springs for $29.99 and is currently only available in black, blue and red.

  • Disney Patents a 3D World Simulator That Doesn’t Need a Headset Or Glasses

Disney Patents a 3D World Simulator That Doesn’t Need a Headset Or Glasses

Disney has filed a patent for a Virtual World Simulator that will allow it to simulate augmented digital worlds without the need for users to wear headsets or glasses.

Disney Enterprises was approved for a “virtual-world simulator” patent during the last week of December. The technology would project 3D images and virtual effects onto physical spaces, according to the US Patent Office.

The technology described in the patent would not be geared for large audiences but would instead track individual visitors around the parks and project images specifically for them on nearby objects, buildings and walls.

Visitors could be tracked through their smartphones or other devices they are carrying so that the tracking information could be relayed to a computer connected to projection devices located throughout the theme parks. After locating the visitors, the “Virtual World Simulator” could project an image of a Disney character in front of the guests, with hidden speakers providing voices for an immersive experience, according to the patent.

The Virtual World Simulator would use a SLAM technique — which stands for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping — to continuously track the ever-changing point of view of a visitor moving through a real-world venue.

  • Disney Teases Realistic, Retractable Lightsaber During Parks Presentation

Disney Teases Realistic, Retractable Lightsaber During Parks Presentation

Thursday, Disney held a virtual news conference where they revealed a Realistic, Retractable Lightsaber that may be coming soon to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and more.

Disney Parks chairman Josh D’Amaro hosted the presentation and touched on topics such as the reopening of Disneyland Resort in California, upcoming Disney World attractions, and how new technology will shape guest experiences.

Then, as D’Amaro gave the closing remarks, he lifted up a lightsaber, turned it on and said “it’s real” before the video ended. The way the light activated from the hilt was similar to how lightsabers activate in the Star Wars films.

“You never know what we’re going to come up with next,” D’Amaro said.

In a blog post released after the presentation, D’Amaro briefly mentioned the Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development team and the work they are doing.

“I can’t wait to share more with you in the near future — this team is really pushing the boundaries of creativity, technology, and storytelling,” D’Amaro wrote.

Disney has filed patents in the past for lightsaber-related technology. And visitors to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge can build their own lightsabers at Savi’s Workshop. Those lightsabers feature a heavier hilt made out of metal.

So far, no other details have been announced. And the video hasn’t been released.
