  • Disney+ Blocks Kids From Watching Peter Pan, Dumbo and Others Due to Racist Stereotypes

Disney+ Blocks Kids From Watching Peter Pan, Dumbo and Others Due to Racist Stereotypes

Disney+ has blocked kids under seven from watching Peter Pan, Dumbo and others over concerns they show racist stereotypes.

While the films remain available on adult accounts, they come with a disclaimer that says: ‘This programme includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now.”

“Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together,” Disney said.

Disney implemented a revised content advisory in October to flag up any issues surrounding racial stereotypes and concerns were raised in relation to Peter Pan and the other productions. The decision to ban the films from children’s accounts was made by a group of external experts who were brought in to assess if the content ‘represented global audiences’.

Other long-standing family favourites – The Aristocats, Swiss Family Robinson and Dumbo – have also been removed from children’s accounts for breaching ‘content advisories’ that were recently put in place.

It is understood the main reason behind Peter Pan being blocked is because it features a Native American tribe whose members are referred to as ‘redskins’.

Meanwhile, the 1970 movie The Aristocats has a Siamese cat character called Shun Gon, whose slanted eyes and prominent teeth have been described as a caricature of East Asian people.

Swiss Family Robinson, which was made in 1960, has been criticised for its ‘yellow face’ and ‘brown face’ pirates.

Dumbo, the 1941 cartoon about a lovable flying elephant, has been accused of ridiculing enslaved African-Americans on Southern plantations. At one point during a musical interlude, faceless black workers toil away to offensive lyrics such as, ‘When we get our pay, we throw our money all away’.

The Disney website says that while it can’t change the past, “we can acknowledge it, learn from it and move forward together to create a tomorrow that today can only dream of.”

  • Disney World Employee Alerts Police to Domestic Violence Victim

Disney World Employee Alerts Police to Domestic Violence Victim

A Walt Disney World cast member was able to help a Pennsylvania woman who called pretending to buy theme park tickets but was really trying to get away from her abusive boyfriend.

According to a report from the Northern York County Regional Police Department in Pennsylvania, a Disney employee called 911 and said she had a woman on the line who she believed needed help.

The Disney employee heard the woman yelling “get off me” and “get away from me” at someone while they were on the phone together on Jan. 9 and sensed something was wrong, the York Dispatch reported.

The Disney employee then started asking the woman yes or no questions. She asked if the woman was actually calling to book a trip, to which the woman replied “no.”

“She then asked (the woman) if she needed law enforcement to her home and she stated ‘yes,’” the report said.

The Disney employee also asked the woman if someone was hurting her, and the woman said “yes.”

Police arrived at the home and found that the woman and her boyfriend had been arguing.

The woman told police that she and 38-year-old Wayne Shiflett had been arguing about him getting a “real job” instead of selling fire extinguishers.

The woman told police that Shifflett had choked her, and that she was afraid she was going to die.

Shiflett was arrested and charged with strangulation, terroristic threats with intent to terrorize another and simple assault.

  • Disney Closes Hall of Presidents to Add Biden Animatronic

Disney Closes Hall of Presidents to Add Biden Animatronic

The night before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, Disney closed The Hall of Presidents attraction at Magic Kingdom in preperation for a new addition.

The Hall of Presidents is a show that “tells the dramatic story of the nation’s founding” using animatronics of U.S. presidents, according to Disney.

The Disney World website was updated late Tuesday with a notice on the attraction’s page that reads, “The Hall of Presidents is currently closed for refurbishment,” as you can see in the picture below:

By Wednesday, a sign placed outside the entrance read, “The Hall of Presidents is currently being prepared to welcome the new president.”

Disney confirmed that an animatronic of Biden is being added to the lineup of other lifelike replicas of past U.S. presidents.

Every sitting president since Bill Clinton has had a speaking role in the attraction. In early 2017, Disney closed the attraction for several months to add a Donald Trump animatronic and make other changes.

Recently, there have been renewed calls for Disney to close The Hall of Presidents permanently or replace it with something less “political.”

Fans have suggested replacements such as the Muppets taking over and doing something similar to their “Great Moments in American History” live show.

The Hall of Presidents is one of the longest running attractions at Disney World, opening with Magic Kingdom in 1971. It only exists at Disney World; Disneyland in California has an attraction called “The Disneyland Story Presenting Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.”
