  • Disneyland’s new Snow White ride criticized for including Prince Charming’s ‘non-consensual’ kiss

Disneyland’s new Snow White ride criticized for including Prince Charming’s ‘non-consensual’ kiss

Disneyland just reopened after being closed for more than a year and they are already receiving backlash for the new ending added to the park’s reimagined Snow White ride.

The ride, now known as Snow White’s Enchanted Wish, has garnered a lot of praise for its upgrades which include new audio, new animation, new music, and stunning visual technology that includes laser projections and LED lights.

But there’s one part of the ride that hasn’t been as well-received: the grand finale of the movie, where Prince Charming kisses a sleeping Snow White to wake her up with “true love’s kiss.”

In a review of the new ride for SFGate.com, the outlet’s managing editor Katie Dowd, and contributor Julie Tremaine, wrote that the kiss should be removed like other “problematic scenes from rides like Jungle Cruise and Splash Mountain’.

“Haven’t we already agreed that consent in early Disney movies is a major issue? That teaching kids that kissing, when it hasn’t been established if both parties are willing to engage, is not OK?” they wrote.

Disney announced earlier this year that it would redesign The Jungle Cruise to replace the “Trader Sam” character, a salesman of shrunken heads. Splash Mountain, meanwhile, was being overhauled to remove stereotypes.

Snow White’s Scary Adventures Reimagined at Disneyland

Snow White’s Scary Adventures has been reimagined into Snow White’s Enchanted Wish.

The classic attraction has been reimagined with new music, LED black lighting and a new animation system, officials said. It also has about 50 new figures.

A team of Imagineers have spent the last year to making the attraction decidedly less scary as the creative arm of Disney reimagined the backstory for the classic Fantasyland dark ride and added new scenes. Take a closer look below:

“It’s a lot brighter,” city spokesman Mike Lyster said. “The ride before was a little dark. But it’s noticeably brighter and newer.”

Now this new ride is in full sparkle as Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure reopen to the public following a year-plus closure. “Snow White’s Enchanted Wish” officially debuted on April 30, the reopening date for The Happiest Place on Earth.”

Snow White’s Scary Adventures to Get New Ending During Major Refurbishment at Disneyland

In 2020, Snow White’s Scary Adventures, an opening day attraction, will celebrate 65 years at Disneyland and Disney has announced that the attraction will be undergoing a major refurbishment and getting a new ending.

This classic Fantasyland attraction, Disneyland park’s only ride-through princess attraction, will be updated with new magic inside and out in 2020. Walt Disney Imagineering is reimagining how the classic tale of Snow White lives happily ever after, and guests will be invited to follow along with her story.

In addition to experiencing familiar elements of the attraction you know and love, you’ll discover enhanced story details and all-new scenes. For example, a new vignette will show Snow White in a beautiful forest setting waking up from her deep sleep as you can see in the concept art below:

Also, the attraction will conclude when Snow White is reunited with her animal friends and a shimmering castle is seen in the distance. The ride currently ends with a bolt of lightning sending the wicked witch tumbling to her death from a mountaintop with a terrifying scream.

Imagineers are implementing state-of-the-art audio and visual technology throughout the attraction, including new music, LED black lighting, laser projections and a new animation system. The exterior of the attraction will be completely refreshed with new, fairy tale-inspired details to complement the nearby charming Sleeping Beauty Castle.

This isn’t the first time the attraction has undergone a significant refurbishment. In 1983, as a whole new version of Fantasyland was unveiled, Snow White’s Adventures reopened with new technology and a brand-new facade, along with the new name.

  • Disney’s Live-Action ‘Snow White’ Reportedly Beginning Production Next Spring

Disney’s Live-Action ‘Snow White’ Reportedly Beginning Production Next Spring

Disney has been turning out live-action remakes like a machine and now the company will reportedly begin production on an updated version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in the spring.

Disney will go into production on its latest animated to live-action remake next March in Vancouver, Canada, according to TheDisInsider.

News of a Disney live-action adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs dates back to 2016 when the project was first confirmed by Disney. Updates were scarce until earlier this year, when it was reported The Amazing Spider-Man helmer Marc Webb was being eyed to direct the project using a screenplay from The Girl on the Train screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson.

The report says Disney is now seeking actors for its central roles, including the titular princess, the Prince, the seven dwarfs and the Evil Queen, who doubles as an Old Hag.

Also possibly on board are Academy Award-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), who created new music for Aladdin with Alan Menken. That film won Disney a magical $1.048 billion globally, making it the sixth highest-grossing film of the year. Disney followed Aladdin with another winning remake — the Jon Favreau-directed The Lion King — that roared to $1.63 billion worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2019 behind only Disney’s own Marvel Studios blockbuster Avengers: Endgame.

Disney’s president of production Sean Bailey — who has led the charge on mining Disney’s treasure trove of cherished animated films and translating them into modern reinterpretations that almost always go on to score big at the box office — has credited Walt Disney Studios Co-Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Alan Horn with Disney’s decision to re-imagine its animated library.

“We were given an incredible opportunity to discover what we wanted to be as a live-action team. We were given a lot of latitude to think about what that was,” Bailey told Vulture in 2017. “We thought if Iron Man and Thor and Captain America are Marvel superheroes, then maybe Alice, Cinderella, Mowgli, and Belle are our superheroes, and Cruella and Maleficent are our supervillains. Maybe if there’s a way to reconnect with that affinity for what those characters mean to people in a way that gets the best talent and uses the best technology, that could become something really exciting. It feels very Disney, playing to the competitive advantages of this label.”

Disney is now developing 101 Dalmatians prequel Cruella, starring Emma Stone and set for release in 2021, and The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey and directed by Rob Marshall (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Into the Woods). Disney first releases its Angelina Jolie-starring Maleficent sequel, Mistress of Evil, Oct. 18 before debuting the live-action Mulan March 27, 2020.
